Nicola's story

“My name is Nicola Miller and I am a make-up artist living on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. I started volunteering for Ellie’s Friends in 2015.

I first came across the Ellie’s Friends website when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2013. Times were pretty hard when I faced cancer as I lost my job and I was unable to get any financial support from the government.  I came across Ellie’s Friends and I immediately thought it was a lovely idea to be able to help or offer people a little break from the Big C.

I decided this year that I wanted to give something back to some of the wonderful charities that helped me whilst going through my treatment. As I live in a very rural location getting involved proved a little harder than I had anticipated as a lot of charities required you in person.

I decided to enquire about volunteering for Ellie’s Friends as this seemed like something that could be done from home using my laptop and it didn’t require a full time commitment.

I started by contacting companies and asking them to get on board and help out by donating freebies.

I have had quite a lot of success so far and I am really happy to be able to help. I get very excited when I get an email back from a company that wants to donate something.

It’s a good feeling knowing you are making other peoples life that little brighter in times of need and I would encourage anyone to get involved, you don’t need a lot of time on your hands, just a laptop or phone.”

We’re really grateful for the support of our volunteers. If you’d like to learn more, or would like to be sent some flyers or an information pack please get in touch. 07969 600673
